7 Ways to Transition from Winter to Spring Naturally

Your body doesn’t instantly switch seasons.

After months of winter darkness, heavier foods, and slower movement, the body needs time to reawaken. Your body doesn’t switch seasons overnight. After months of winter, our metabolism, hormones, and energy slow down.

So when spring arrives, many people feel tired, foggy, or even a little irritable. After winter, many people are still stuck in what I call ‘winter mode.’

Here are five ‘winter mode’ signs:

  1. You feel tired even after sleeping

  2. You're craving heavy comfort foods

  3. Your digestion feels sluggish or bloated

  4. You feel unmotivated or foggy

  5. Your muscles and joints feel stiff

In Chinese medicine, winter is a time of rest and conservation. Spring is when energy should start moving again.

If that shift doesn't happen smoothly, the body can feel stuck.”

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is the season of the Liver, which helps regulate detoxification, circulation, and emotional balance. If your body feels stuck between winter fatigue and spring energy, acupuncture and functional medicine can help guide the transition.

In both Western physiology and Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is a time when energy begins to rise again, but the transition can bring fatigue, brain fog, allergies, and digestive changes.

Supporting your body gently through seasonal change can make a huge difference in how you feel.

Here’s a few ideas how to support your energy, hormones, digestion, and mood naturally.

1. Get Morning Sunlight

After months of winter darkness, your body needs light to reset its internal clock.

Morning sunlight helps:

• Regulate cortisol
• Improve mood
• Boost metabolism
• Improve sleep at night

Try 10–20 minutes of natural light within an hour of waking.

2. Eat Spring Foods

Your body naturally craves lighter, greener foods this time of year.

Add more:

  • Leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, fresh herbs, light healthy proteins, olive oil & healthy fats

These foods support digestion and the body’s natural detox pathways.

3. Move Your Body Again

Winter slows us down, which is normal. Spring is the time to gently increase movement.

Start with:

• Walking
• Stretching
• Yoga
• Tai chi
• Light strength training

Movement helps circulation, lymph flow, and energy levels.

4. Support Your Liver

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is the season of the Liver, which helps regulate energy, hormones, and detoxification.

Support it with:

• Bitter greens
• Hydration
• Fiber-rich foods
• Sweating through exercise or sauna

Avoid extreme detoxes; the body prefers gentle support.

5. Clear Mental Clutter

Just like our homes, our minds accumulate clutter during winter.

Spring is a perfect time to reset. ..Spring Cleaning!!!

• Clear something out of your house every day
• Meditation / journaling
• Reducing screen time
• Spending time in nature

Mental clarity often follows seasonal shifts.

6. Reconnect With Nature

Spring is a season of renewal and growth.

Time outdoors reduces stress hormones and improves mental health.

Simple ways:

  • Walking/Biking outside

  • Gardening

  • Grounding barefoot

  • Breathing fresh air

Your nervous system recognizes nature as safety.

Spring is a season of renewal, so the body needs support to transition smoothly.
