The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?

The fun, busy holiday season can often be accompanied with stress and sickness. How can we avoid becoming sick, stressed-out, and depressed people at what is otherwise known as “the most wonderful time of the year”?

Let’s talk about four life changing topics . . . EAT, HYDRATE, EXERCISE, SLEEP…REPEAT

  1. EAT Good Food. Moderation is the key to the season’s overeating problem. Our bodies suffer when we eat too much food.

  • Use a smaller plate - your mind will consider it a full plate regardless of its size!

  • Sit down and take time to visit while you eat. Slowing down how fast we eat supports good digestion, and can slow bloating.

  • When faced with many good choices, take a little mouthful of each, rather than heaps.

  • Steam or roast vegetables rather than boiling them - healthier and tastier! Marinating them before also enhances the flavour.

  • When serving others, put out some of the food, and serve in stages to slow down eating.

  • Serve some fresh fish or seafood instead of turkey, ham or red meat.

2. HYDRATE. Water (plain water) is crucial to your good health for detoxification, waste elimination and metabolism. Try to consume at least 8-10 glasses of water a day or ½ your body weight in ounces. For every glass of alcohol, coffee or soft drink, have a glass of water first. Or have a glass of water before you reach for your second drink.

3. EXERCISE. Activities like walking, cycling or spinning, swimming, hiking, snowshoeing, or weight lifting helps our bodies process the food we are consuming this season. Our bodies are designed to move, and eliminate toxins and waste through exercise.

4. SLEEP. It’s deeply nourishing and something we cannot afford to miss. When we sleep our body renews itself. Without proper rest our bodies do not function optimally, and our metabolism slows down. The thyroid and the liver are responsible for maintaining our metabolism, and are most active at night removing wastes from the body. Intentionally plan your sleep and party schedule for the season, so you can look forward to the nights you can tuck in early!
